STEMI – Learning by Creating

In Croatia, however and around the world, we’re currently witnessing a deficit of education in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). STEMI is a project designed with the aim to contribute to solving this problem. With the vision of a world in which knowledge is shared openly, we’re creating an online platform for project-based learning: STEMI – Learning by Creating. Our goal is to enable children to learn science, technology, engineering and mathematics through an innovative approach to learning – by creating.

STEMI will provide the opportunity to learn STEM fields through projects that will consist of a package of physical components that individuals or groups will put up together by watching online instructions.

The first pilot project, which STEMI wants to launch, is the production of Hexapod robot which is controlled by a smartphone. The most important application of robots in STEMI project is to promote and awake the interest in robotics, as well as STEM fields in general, among the students, high school students and even elementary school children. If we provide an opportunity for young people to experiment and learn through experience and they make a robot like this one, we believe that in that way we can increase the interest in the acquisition of new knowledge.

The lecture will show how STEMI originated as an idea, what challenges we encountered, how we managed to overcome them and what we have learned from our own mistakes.
